How do I enroll my child(ren) in the Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School?
In order to be considered for admission, parents or guardians need to submit a completed application form (HYPERLINK) for each child. In the likely event that the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available, a lottery will be held to randomly determine the allocation of available spots. In accordance with the policies of the Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS), priority is given to siblings of currently enrolled students. Should the number of siblings of enrolled students exceed the number of spaces available, a lottery will be conducted among sibling applicants to determine who will be offered admission.
Who is eligible to participate in the lottery
At this time, we are accepting applications for students aged 3 (by September 1, 2010) through 12 (6th grade) who live in Baltimore City. We are also working on approval for a middle school program. If you do not currently reside in the city of Baltimore but you will be a city resident for the 2010-2011 school year, please indicate this on your application. Proof of Baltimore City residence will be required of all new students
How many spots will there be for the academic year 2010-2011?
Since we do not know the exact number of siblings expected to enroll, or how many current students will choose not to reenroll, we cannot predict how many offers of admission we will be able to make for the upcoming year.
When is the lottery held? How is it conducted?
The lottery will be held at Baltimore Montessori on February 26th, 2010 at 9 a.m. During the lottery, names will be drawn at random, by grade, with spaces offered in the order of names drawn. When the capacity for each grade level is reached, the remaining applicants will be assigned a position on the wait list based on the random order in which they were drawn If there are no spaces available in a particular grade, names will be drawn directly for the wait list. The lottery is open to the public and is overseen by a representative of BCPSS.
What if one of my children is offered admission, but the other is not?
In keeping with the policies of the BCPSS, siblings are given priority, and we make every effort to keep families together. If one of your children enrolls in the school, the other will move up on the waitlist.
What is the deadline for submitting an application? Does it matter when I submit my application? The school office must receive all applications by February 24th, 2010, at 2:45 pm. Applications may be sent via fax, mail, or dropped off in person. Whether the application is received first or last has no bearing on wait list order. All applications received by the deadline are treated equally. Applications received after this deadline will be added to the waitlist in the order that they are received, after the lottery is held.
When/how will I be notified of the lottery results?
Applicants will be notified by mail in early March of the lottery results. My child is 5, but will be entering first grade. How should I complete her application? If your 5 year old has already completed Kindergarten, please indicate this on your application and circle grade1. If my child is not offered a spot this year, do we retain the same position on the waiting list for next year, or will we need to reapply? In keeping with the policies of the BCPSS, the wait list is only valid for one school year. At the end of the year, interested families who are still on the wait list will need to reapply and participate in the following year's lottery.
Is it possible to schedule a classroom observation?
Due to the volume of applicants, we cannot schedule classroom observations at this time. We strongly encourage all interested families to attend one of our open houses (HYPERLINK to dates).
Are there more public charter schools in Baltimore City?
Yes.There is a list of current and proposed charter schools on the BCPSS website (HYPERLINK) |
